PIERRISTE is man-made polycrystalline diamond powder, a super-abrasive capable of shaping and polishing many materials faster, better, and more cost effectively than any other diamond abrasive.

That gives PIERRISTE the ability to solve many industrial problems. It is gentle enough to polish complex metallographic or petrographic specimens, and other materials that contain soft/hard/brittle domains, without damaging critical surface integrity of such precious specimens. It performs demanding tasks where other abrasives are too harsh and inconsistent for delicate materials, or not tough and fast enough for demanding, rugged jobs.

Surface area and the inherent cleavage/wear process, in effect, makes PIERRISTE particles "self-sharpening." As tiny microcrystallines break off, they reveal more equally rough, sharp microcrystallines with equally effective, multifaceted cutting edges. Blocky mass and shape are preserved.

By contrast, sharp, pointed particles inherent in monocrystalline powders tend to produce deeper vertical microcracking, which must be either tolerated or removed by tedious and costly extra polishing steps. This means that PIERRISTE particles abrade a workpiece uniformly regardless of orientation; they produce none of the deep random scratches and microcracking often caused by the directional, sharp-pointed monocrystalline particles.

In addition to the productivity benefits, the reduction in subsurface damage achieved with PIERRISTE is particularly important for applications in which magnetic flux, thermal conductivity, and light transparency are significant criteria./p>

Hard, tough PIERRISTE diamond particles produce exceptionally high rates of abrasion on a wide variety of superhard materials. This table compares removal rates, using 1 micron abrasives under identical conditions.

Even under low-pressure loading of parts, the many small crystallite groups that contact the workpiece achieve extremely high unit pressures, which remove material from the surface in small bites. The net effect is both faster material removal and a smoother polished surface (results that normally are mutually exclusive).
